I just finished watching Matthew Perry’s Numb. The movie is from 2007, but I just found the DVD a few days ago. Perry is my favorite from FRIENDS. This movie is my kind of romance; the one that isn’t oh-my-fucking-god-i-know-exactly-how-this-will-end kind of movie and it doesn’t involve one of those oh-i’m-so-happy-i-can’t-fuckin’-shut-up-and-i-flip-my-hair-all-the-time leading female character.

It’s feels pretty real - as in, it can actually happen in real life - and that includes the dialogues. This one, is one of favorite dialogues because none of them answered with,

“Someone who will be with me FOREVER.”

Because, people? Lovers? As comforting as “forever” might sound to most of you, there is NO such thing as “forever”. Life does NOT have a “forever”; fairytales does, but not life.

So, yeah … I like this film.

:)

… because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

— Harry Burns (When Harry Met Sally)

Don’t remember how many times I’ve seen this film, but now, I can understand what Harry meant with that.

Sometimes, it takes a real man to set his ego aside, admit defeat and simply start all over again.

There are distinct differences, between male and female brains. Female brains have a larger hippocampus, which usually makes them better at retention and memory. Male brains have a bigger parietal cortex, which helps when fending off an attack. Male brains confront challenges differently than female brains. Women are hardwired to communicate with language. Empathy. Men,not so much. It doesn’t mean we’re any less capable of emotion. We can talk about our feelings. It’s just that, most of the time, we’d really rather not.

It’s a common belief that positive thinking leads to a happier healthier life. As children we are told to smile, be cheerful, and put on a happy face. As adults we are told to look on the bright side, to make lemonade, and see glasses as half full. Sometimes reality can get in the way of our ability to act the happy part though. Youre hope can fail, boyfriends can cheat, friends can disappoint. It’s in these moments, when you just want to get real, drop the act, and be your true scared unhappy self.

When we say things like “people don’t change” it drives scientist crazy because change is literally the only constant in all of science. Energy. Matter. It’s always changing, morphing, merging, growing, dying. It’s the way people try not to change that’s unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting things be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing despite every scientific indication that anything in this lifetime is permanent. Change is constant. How we experience change that’s up to us. It can feel like death or it can feel like a second chance at life. If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline. Like at any moment we can have another chance at life. Like at any moment, we can be born all over again.
